Hand Washing & Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
The Ministry of Health has published guidelines for proper hand washing. All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should wash their hands before liturgies begin. Many parishes use alcohol sanitizers such as Purell for those who will be distributing communion just before Communion. To ensure that this "handwashing ritual" does not become a distraction or the misdirected focus during the Fraction Rite it would be best if ministers had a small individual bottles of an alcohol sanitizer at their seats. Then, the handwashing should be done discreetly and if at all possible before coming into the sanctuary or before approaching the altar from the sanctuary (in parishes where the extraordinary ministers sit in the sanctuary area).
These Ministy of Health Guidelines could be posted in the sacristy, public washrooms and parish hall kitchens. An illustrated edition of these instructions can be found here.
